DAY 1 AT THE CONVENTION

DAY 1 AT THE CONVENTION
Day 1 was filled with speakers such as AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler, Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield and Reverend Wendell Anthony of the Detroit Branch, NAACP.
Nearly 900 delegates have gathered for the UAW Constitutional Convention to decide the path we should take forward.
The delegates voted on the rules that must be followed throughout the convention, they approved reports of the Credentials and Rules Committee, and they voted on several constitutional amendments. Among the amendments approved was an proposal to establish a Health & Safety Standing Committee. Delegates also approved an amendment to “enshrine our UAW Veterans Department in our UAW Constitution.” (UAW, https://uaw.org/uaws-39th-constitutional-convention-kicks-off-in-detroit-michigan/).
Coming Soon...
I have heard from a source that delegates may soon vote on establishing another standing committee. If approved, that committee would be LUCA.
For those who may not be familiar with LUCA, it stands for the Local Union Communication Association. LUCA is made up of members who help keep the membership informed through photography, newsletters, websites, social media, email communications, and other forms of member outreach.
Effective communication plays an important role in ensuring members have access to information about union events, activities, educational opportunities, bargaining updates, and other matters affecting the membership.
As additional information becomes available during the Convention, I will provide updates on any action taken regarding LUCA and other proposed Constitutional Amendments and Resolutions.
