Freightliner's Veterans Memorial
VETERANS HONOR BRICK:
Since becoming a member of UAW Local 3520 nearly 12 years ago, I had often heard about the Veterans Memorial and the commemorative bricks honoring our service members. However, it wasn’t until this past Friday that I finally had the opportunity to visit in person.
I only wish I had gone sooner.
The memorial is truly a remarkable tribute to the men and women who have served our country. It stands as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by our veterans and those who answered the call to serve. I encourage all of our members to take a moment to visit the memorial if you haven’t already. It’s an experience that leaves a lasting impression and a deeper appreciation for those who have given so much.
I asked our Veterans Chairperson - Steve Barber for history on the Veterans Memorial and how it came to be.
"Actually, the "brainstorm" for the idea of a Veteran's Memorial was first introduced by myself when I was Chairman in 2016. There were others who added different aspects to the Veteran's Memorial such as Robert Osborne and Henning Bruns (Plant Manager).
I must give Henning Bruns the most credit because he took the idea to a different level by getting monuments for each branch of service and obtained the funding from Germany. The Veterans Memorial became a reality in the spring of 2018.
Any Veteran who becomes a seniority employee (in other words they have completed their probationary period) is entitled to have a brick out front. If any Veteran that is a seniority employee and does not have a brick out front, may contact Steve Barber at 704-645-5306 or email me at william.barber@daimlertruck.com and I will get them a brick.
The company that does the "dusting off" (engraving) of the bricks prefer to have at least 15-20 names to submit a request."
