Brothers, Sisters, and Siblings:

I am here on the floor in Detroit for Day 1 of the UAW's 39th Constitutional Convention and I have to say — what an incredible day to be a union member!

Nearly 900 delegates came together under the theme "Our Generation's Defining Moment" — and standing here in that room you feel every bit of it.

We heard powerful words from AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler, Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield, and Reverend Dr. Wendell Anthony of the Detroit Branch NAACP. Their message was clear: working people are more unified than ever and we will not be divided.

On the floor, delegates passed key constitutional amendments — including establishing Health & Safety standing committees and officially enshrining the UAW Veterans Department in our Constitution. It was also great to see Former President Ray Curry honored as President Emeritus and VP Chuck Browning receive the UAW Social Justice Award — two men who have given so much to this union.

On behalf of your elected delegates from Local 276 — Kenny Hines, Frank Baskin, Jimmy Mack, Stacy Steele, Sheila Hill, Keith Crowell, and myself — we are here representing YOU this week. There is important work ahead, and we are proud to stand alongside brothers and sisters from across the country fighting for our future.

In Solidarity,
Mike Cartwright
President, UAW Local 276
