Convention Report, Day 3
In a jam-packed third day, delegates nominated candidates for this year's International Officer elections, voted to expand the constitutional definition of a retiree, and elected an International Trustee, alongside robust discussions on numerous other amendments and resolutions as the convention body continues to set the direction of the union for the next four years.
Accepted Nominations
- UAW President nominees who accepted: Rich Boyer, Shawn Fain, Tricia Geiger, Brian Keller, Will Lehman, and Greg Mooney.
- UAW Secretary-Treasurer nominees: Brandon Campbell, Roc Ciers, Margaret Mock.
- UAW Vice President nominees: Mike Booth, Laura Dickerson, Rachael Dickinson, Eric Fleming, Kevin Gotinsky, Ryan Hiestand, Kisha Richardson, Matt Slade, Tony Totty, Mike Turner, and Robert Wright.
- Per the UAW Monitor's Election Rules, nominated candidates must be vetted by the Monitor before becoming official candidates for office.
Speakers
- NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson delivered a fiery speech calling on the labor movement to engage in the political process this November to protect fundamental rights under attack, telling delegates that the fight ahead is for the future of the nation and for working men and women across the country, not against each other.
- Congresswoman Debbie Dingell praised the union's recent accomplishments, saying the UAW has always been strongest when bold, fighting not just for its own members but for all working people.
Honors and Elections
- The UAW posthumously honored civil and labor rights icon Rev. Jesse Jackson with the union's Social Justice Award, with his son, U.S. Congressman Jonathan Jackson, accepting on his behalf. Jackson recalled his father building the Rainbow Coalition and reminding autoworkers they had more in common with teachers, janitors, farmworkers, and nurses around the country than with those seeking to divide people by race, region, religion, or background.
- Delegates also elected UAW Local 838 Financial Secretary Stacie Loveless to serve as an International Trustee for a 12-year term.
In Solidarity,
Mike Cartwright
President, UAW Local 276
