2022 UAW CONSTITUTION CORRECTION (letter from President Shawn Fain):

At the 38th Constitutional Convention, on July 27, 2022, delegates voted to adopt Submitted Resolution #0373. The discussion and debate on the floor of the Convention pertaining to this Resolution focused on moving up the accrual of strike pay from day eight of a strike to day one of a strike. The last sentence of Resolution #0373 provided, “Weekly benefits will amount to at least $400 per striking UAW member.” (emphasis added).

Following delegates’ adoption of Resolution #0373, International Union staff updated the Constitution to add a new Article 50, Section 10 setting forth the language from this Resolution. In updating the Constitution, housekeeping changes were made to format the language of the Resolution into constitutional language, but there was absolutely no intent, or effort, to change the substance or meaning of the Resolution adopted by the delegates. Unfortunately, however, the words “at least” were inadvertently and mistakenly omitted from the last sentence of Article 50, Section 10. This mistake has, unfortunately, caused questions about the International Executive Board’s ability to increase strike assistance above $400, as it did earlier this year.

To clarify, consistent with Resolution #0373 adopted by delegates to the 38th Constitutional Convention, the last sentence of Article 50, Section 10, should read as follows: “Weekly benefits shall be at least $400 (four hundred dollars) per week, per striking member.” Subsequent printings of the 2022 Constitution will reflect this corrected language.
