SOLIDARITY WEDNESDAY – WHY WE WEAR RED

UAW members wear red shirts on Wednesdays as a symbol of solidarity. This tradition, also practiced by other unions, is a way for workers to show unity and make a visible statement to management and the public. The practice is not meant to be confrontational but rather a positive expression of workers standing together. How did it start? “Gerry Horgan was a CWA chief steward for Westchester County in New York who died in August of 1989 while he worked a picket line. He left behind a wife and two daughters. The vehicle that struck him was driven by a SCAB and the teenage daughter of a manager who was never charged for his death. UAW wear red shirts on Wednesday to remember Horgan and the sacrifices he made protecting the picket line.” We would like to thank all members that are participating and wearing their Red Shirt on Wednesdays.

PLACING A CALL FOR A UNION REPRESENATIVE

Lately many of our members have tried to reach out to their Union Representation thru Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Snapchat, and other forms of social media. Some members also try to call or text their Union Representative’s personal phone. None of these are official calls, to make sure that we have a record of your placed call we ask that you please place a call with your supervisor or call the Union Hall. These are the only two official ways of contacting your union official and maintaining a record of your call. At the beginning of March of this year we launched a new HCC portal in which members will receive verification thru text or e-mail of their Union Call placement and/or removal. This system will give the membership up to date and timely information as to whether or not their call was put into the system.

HARASSMENT AND DISCRIMINATION

Today’s society is very complex and our surroundings here in Arlington reflect the world in which we live today. Harassment and discrimination are issues that affect all facets of society, and we are not immune. Any type of harassment and/or discrimination has no place in the UAW or our working environment. The UAW supports an environment free of harassment and/or discrimination, and we are committed to addressing any concerns quickly. The Collective Bargaining Agreement Document 99 provides clear expectations for all members regarding harassment and discrimination. “All employees are expected to deal fairly and honestly with one another to ensure a work environment free of intimidation and harassment. Abuse of the dignity of anyone, through ethnic, Racist, religious, or sexist slurs or through other derogatory or objectionable conduct, is offensive and unacceptable employee behavior. This policy also prohibits sexual advances, request for sexual favors and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature.”

HANDICAP PARKING

All handicap parking permits must now be state issued, effective August 1, 2025. GM issued handicap parking badges are discontinued and will no longer be accepted when parking in handicap parking. If you only have a GM issued handicap parking permit you will have to park in general parking and parking in a handicap spot will be at your own risk.
