GM Chairperson's Letter - February Weather

Dear UAW Local 276 Brothers and Sisters:

On the week ending February 6, 2022, we (Arlington Assembly) suffered a major weather event in the Dallas Metroplex area.  Many of our Brothers and Sisters were stuck in their homes due to the amount of ice and snow that we received because of this historic storm.  Although this storm hit the Dallas Metroplex area, General Motors did not call off all the shifts and felt the need to try and operate while in the midst of this storm.  This, in turn, was a cause for high absenteeism during many of the shifts that were not cancelled.  We have been in talks with Local Management to try and mitigate the circumstances around these shifts, but so far it has been to no avail.  Management is choosing to take Vacation Restricted (VR) hours from the members who called in on these shifts and will proceed with discipline under Document Number 8 for the members who did not call in on their effected shifts.

We, as a membership, have gone above and beyond to make things happen for General Motors on many occasions.  We have shown our worth, but that all falls on deaf ears.  As we have these discussions, Management has stated that it is not “right or wrong” it is contractual under Document Number 84 of the UAW/GM National Agreement.  Although that may be the case at some point, they must do right by the people.  They will need this membership sooner rather than later and this incident will not be forgotten.

In Solidarity,

Kenny Hines
