Red Shirt Wednesdays

Social share icons

The tradition of UAW union members wearing red shirts on Wednesdays to show solidarity began in 1989 with the Communications Workers of America (CWA). The tradition originated after the death of Gerry Horgan, a CWA chief steward who was killed by a car while walking a picket line during a strike against Bell Atlantic. The driver was the teenage daughter of a manager and was never charged.
